Blue Feather Music Festival
September 20 & 21, 2002
Yukon Art Centre

The Blue Feather Music Festival was a new experience for the Society.  The event was held over two evenings and required a lot of work for the organizers and volunteers. The musicians, the artists and the people who created the atmosphere worked hard preparing for the event.  A prayer song to give thanks was sung by Lacy Scarff to open and close each evening. Everyone who attended was treated to an outstanding performance! For some of the musicians and artists the event provided a forum to display their talents to an audience that had not heard their music or seen their art. The event offered an array of music from folk country, good old rock and roll, the blues and a taste of new age music. Much of the songs were original music that touched your heartstrings, soothed your mind, gave your inspiration and made you want to dance! There was an array of artwork from photography, prints, a handmade hunting knife, hand made silver bracelets, a junior guitar, a native hand drum, a unique photograph of a white raven and an original piece by Sarah Mc Laughlin.  The silent art auction seen some enthusiastic bidding and raised a substantial amount of money. The feast offered a variety of choices from buffalo and moose stew, fresh salmon, bannock, wholesome organic breads, tarts with berries from the land and spring water, organic coffee and teas to quench your thirst. The feast only served to entice you more by the layout of the tables. They were decorated with burnt wood candleholders and autumn colored foliage from the forest.

The theme of the event was about “Honoring the Gift” of music and art within our lives and the important role it plays in all cultures of the world. The MC’s kept the audience entertained with their humorous nature and heart felt message to inspire and support our youth to discover their gifts. The lighting show was a fabulous display of rainbow colors interwoven to create the effect of the northern lights. Blue eagle feathers hung from the mics on the stage to help send thoughts and prayers to the Creator and to give strength.

The Blue Feather Music Festival was a complete success due to the generous support of the community, the technicians, the sponsors, the volunteers, the organizers and the youth. The youth that participated were included in all parts of the production of the event. They were provided with an opportunity to learn new skills in lighting, stage management, production, artwork, hosting and serving the public. The people who attended were totally impressed by the quality of the whole show from the music, the art, the feast, the decorating and the positive energy the event created.
